Aspects vs Things is a two-act choral composition for four sopranos and four altos, using vocal techniques including articulation of isolated consonants, syllabic singing, gasping, and spoken word. The specific expressive techniques require deconstruction of words into shorter syllables and single letters, indicating the struggle to express. The piece is specifically meant to represent suppression of women's voices, and for this purpose incorporates quotations from iconic texts as “mocking” devices; such as Thomas Wilson’s The Arte of Rhetorique (1560) and Wallace Craig’s The Expressions of Emotions in Pigeons (1909-11).
