about

Noise à Noise label and Post-Orientalism Music community are proudly presenting "24 Post-Orientalism Preludes” by Ehsan Saboohi. This composition series is among a trilogy, plus an episode-zero album that he has composed and produced throughout the few recent months and is now being added to the past series on Bandcamp. This album is fully produced, and will not be pending release for even a month, as the pre-order lasts until the next Bandcamp-Friday event on May 5th, all in 3 weeks.

Ehsan Saboohi is a composer and music theorist, he considers himself a post-orientalist composer, a term he has coined to describe a music language for analyzing the aesthetics of his and his colleagues’ compositions. He demands a different language of common Contemporary Classical music trends by taking inspiration from the philosophical-social ideas of the famous philosopher Edward Said.

“Post-Orientalism is a modern music language that uses microtonal sounds and intervals alongside altered sound chain and block structures to achieve a post-orientalism musical piece in different acoustic and electroacoustic compositions.”

Composer’s Note (An imaginary letter to Edward Said).

Hi dear Edward.

There are a few days that I wanted to sit and write a small note on you ‘24 Post-Orientalism Preludes’ which is one of my compositions, to send to the publisher. Just imagine this! If it was for 1722, we may be a contemporary of great J. S. Bach, while he was constructing an empire for western music! We may sit in a café listening to the 24-Preludes by Bach! Won’t you honestly find it very beautiful? Oh what a development! A genius is a genius after all! And that’s it! Or do you think if there were chances that he would ask me to play my own prelude for him to find out how it sounds? Or they may never ask us to play? Maybe they ask about the word itself; what is Orientalism anyway with or without a prefix? I bet you had to defend your book first! Well, you are always prepared and fresh for it, and I think he would like your ideas too. But do you think that he would like my preludes too? I wonder if he would like them, using microtonal intervals… But let’s think about it Edward, if he happened to like the preludes, if the chance was one in a hundred that he sits and uses float and non-regulating intervals instead of those preludes, then how would the whole Classical and Romantic era sound like? Oh, I believe Brahms would be losing his mind. I just remembered it! You too have not yet listened to the ‘24 Post-Orientalism preludes’ and I can’t yet ask you for your feedback, comments! I will attach the sheet music of the whole composition. I’d be looking forward to hear your opinion about it.

Your small friend,
Ehsan,
